Constipation-fighting foods

You're not alone if you're feeling backed up. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive & Kidney Diseases, 63 million Americans have constipation (NIDDK). 

Most of us have experienced constipation, which increases with age. 

When stool flows too slowly through the big bowel (colon), constipation occurs. Constipation is three or fewer bowel motions per week. 

Constipation can lead to discomfort, pain, & haemorrhoids, explains Sandra J. Ar√©valo Valencia, MPH, RDN, of Montefiore Nyack Hospital. 

Not pleasant. Constipation can be caused by stress, drugs, or food. Sometimes this condition can be improved by eating specific foods & avoiding others. 

These dietary changes may ease internal congestion. Scandinavians pack sandwiches between rye bread slices. 

People with constipation who ate rye bread daily had improved defecation frequency & stool passage compared to white bread.
